Experimental Projects

Autosport Labs is dedicated to developing innovative, flexible and cost effective automotive performance systems and components. They present them to the enthusiast community as ‘Experimental’, and involve many with testing and feedback. Each project eventually ends up as a flexible and capable piece of automotive technology.

Typically the design, stability and reliability of various projects developed by Autosport Labs improves over time as they mature, passing through Inception, Design, Prototype, Internal Testing, Field Beta-Testing and finally made available to the general enthusiast community. Regardless of the maturity of the project, there will always be occasions where flaws are discovered- sometimes by the Autosport Labs community of users; other times by the Autosport Labs R&D staff. The “open” nature of these projects allows for these flaws to be identified, evaluated and potentially rectified in an efficient and effective way.

Open design

All projects developed by Autosport Labs are “open” in the sense that you, as the user, can inspect the design, construction, and implementation of the technology for purposes of performing the critical evaluation necessary to determine if it meets your requirements and is suitable for your application. Most, if not all, of the projects developed by Autosport Labs have a large software component. The software source code is available for download and is open to your modifications and enhancements. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the technology license agreement.

User Community and Information Resources

Autosport Labs project documentation is stored in a collaborative content management system based on popular Wiki software – found here You, as a user of Autosport Labs technology will find this a valuable resource for building kits, modifications and customizations, and general how-to information; you are encouraged to contribute to this information repository along with others!

Finally, but most importantly, they have an active user forum found here, as a resource for you to search for answers, ask questions, suggest new features, modifications or different techniques, and generally collaborate with other like-minded enthusiasts.

Mission Critical GPS with multi-GNSS and automatic dead reckoning

An advanced multi-band GNSS receiver is included, with automatic dead reckoning capabilities to provide highly reliable positioning, even when subjected to intermittent interference or loss of satellites due to aggressive terrain or obstructions. The receiver concurrently tracks GPS, GLONASS, Beidou and Galileo GNSS systems and supports update rates to 20Hz (up-sampled to 25Hz). Position, speed, altitude, distance and GPS statistics are provided in the telemetry stream and log file.

Predictive Lap Timing

100’s of tracks available worldwide combined with on-board predictive lap timing provides real-time feedback to the driver.

With the included interactive track map builder you can be assured you can roll up to your favorite track and get the lap times and statistics you need.

6 Axis Accelerometer and Gyro

Get 3-axis G-force plus Yaw / Pitch and Roll using the on-board high performance 6 axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) – use it to analyze peak cornering G’s, or detect oversteer / understeer situations.

WiFi and Bluetooth Connectivity

802.11bgn WiFi connectivity provides access to streaming data as well as remote configuration using the included RaceCapture app. RaceCapture/Apex can act as both an Access Point as well as operate in client mode. The included Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity provides a high-speed link to Android compatible devices.

Dual CAN bus

Two CAN 2.0 compliant channels are available, providing baud rates up to 1MBPS. CAN bus data can be mapped to channels using built in OBD-II, direct CAN channel mapping, or custom logic mapping via Lua scripting.
Software controlled CAN termination

A RaceCapture exclusive: with a flip of a switch in the RaceCapture App you can enable or disable built-in CAN termination – no external resistors to add, switches to flip, or jumpers to set.
Powerful ECU and sensor integration

CAN OBDII support, direct mapping of CAN channels from ECUs such as Motec, Link, AEM, and Bosch, support for sensor networks and OEM CAN data streams are all supported with RaceCapture/Apex. Two CAN channels allows for maximum flexibility when designing your sensor network.

Analog, Digital and GPIO output capabilities

8 external 0-5v analog inputs with 12 bit ADC, 4 channel timers for measuring RPM or frequency and 3 general purpose I/O ports for low speed inputs or controlling outputs up to 1A. (open drain)

Onboard SD card logging

A micro-SD card slot is provided for on-board data acquisition file recording. 32GB SDHC cards are supported.

IP65 rating provides protection against dust and moisture. Power and signaling is provided via dual 12 pin Deutsch connectors and dual SMA connections for 3.5G telemetry and GPS.

ODB-II Classic Adapter

Unlock OBDII data from your 1996-2007 ECU

The OBDII Classic adapter brings OBDII data from pre-CAN bus OBDII vehicles (1996-2007) to your RaceCapture/Pro (MK3 or MK2), RaceCapture/Track, and RaceCapture/Apex system (or other system that supports CAN-only ODB-II data).

How it works

The OBDII classic adapter effectively modernizes your car’s legacy OBDII interface by translating CAN OBDII queries into the appropriate legacy OBDII protocol that your ECU can understand.

This means devices that expect only a modern CAN OBDII interface can transparently work with any OBDII enabled vehicle (1996 – present).

RaceCapture/Pro (MK3, MK2)
Any device that can only communicate with CAN OBDII ECUs, including some AIM devices, and others.

Optimized to get the best performance out of your ECU

The Classic OBDII adapter automatically tunes itself to get the best performance, pulling data as fast as your ECU will allow. Note, the performance will vary based on the ECU and OBDII protocol supported.

If your car is 1996-2007, it uses one of the protocols supported by the OBDII classic adapter. Check with your manufacturer to confirm what protocol is supported on your vehicle.

Note: when connected to a CAN OBDII vehicle, the CAN signals are passed through, and the OBDII classic adapter is effectively bypassed.

What channels will I get?

You’ll get the SAE standard channels that your car’s ECU supports – channels such as RPM, Throttle Position, Engine Temperature, Manifold Pressure, Fuel Level and more – depending on what your car’s ECU supports.
